D for Döner (Vegetarisch)

4 Apr

Yes, Döner Kebab is a turkish meat based dish – Döner meaning ‘Rotating grilled meat’.    This is also known by other names like ‘Gyros’ or ‘Shawarma’.

No, being a vegetarian I don’t eat Döner Kebab.

But in all the shops that serves Döner Kebab in Germany, you would also find ‘Vegetarisches Döner’ — that is the Vegetarian version of the Döner (w/o meat).  Now don’t ask me what is Döner without meat!!!

Vegetarian Döner is primarily ‘Pita bread filled with vegetables as salads — onions, aubergine, tomato, beet root, lettuce et al. and cheese (Schafskaese / Feta cheese) with Joghurt based dressing.  One can choose the choice of vegetables that could be part of the salad.  One portion of Vegetarian Döner is good enough for a full meal or can also be a interim snack 😉

Making of the Döner happens just in front of you and as you select the food items that go into it 🙂

Döner Vegetarisch

Unless you are too specific not to step into a shop that sells non-vegetarian items too, don’t hesitate to walk into a Döner Kebab shop and ask for the vegetarian version! 🙂
